Michiel van Trommel
Michiel van Trommel (1963) is an orthopedic surgeon who earned his PhD on the recovery of the meniscus. He focuses daily on treating knee problems. Michiel van Trommel works as an orthopedic surgeon at the BovenIJ Hospital in Amsterdam. He is the founder of the KneeClinic, which was the first specialized clinic in the Netherlands to focus exclusively on a single joint. In 2022, the KneeClinic became part of a large healthcare network.
In 2025, he founded the Dutch Hip and KneeClinic, a specialized clinic dedicated solely to prosthetic surgery for the hip and knee. The clinic serves patients from all over Europe. Its team consists of specialized orthopedic surgeons who are fully dedicated to treating a single joint.
Career
After high school, in 1989, Michiel van Trommel started studying medicine. He specialized in orthopedic surgery and later obtained his PhD in meniscus repair. During his studies, he worked as a student researcher at the university. Michiel van Trommel’s career began at the Leyenburg Hospital in The Hague and the Sofia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam, where he worked during his specialization as an orthopedic surgeon.
He then followed a fellowship in Spinal Trauma, Spinal Injuries Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London in 1996. And in the same year he also followed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery, Sports Medicine & Shoulder Service in New York. In 1997, he started working as Chef de Clinique Orthopaedie & Traumalogie at the Onze Lieve Vrouwen Gasthuis in Amsterdam. Since 1998, Michiel van Trommel has worked as an orthopedic surgeon at the BovenIJ Hospital.
KneeClinic
In 2009, Michiel van Trommel founded the KneeClinic, an independent treatment center specialized in simple to the most complex knee problems. The KneeClinic has a location in Haarlem and Amsterdam. The clinic strives to serve the patient faster and better with specialized doctors, without long waiting times. In 2022, the KneeClinic became part of XpertClinics.
Dutch Hip and KneeClinic
In 2025, a group of experienced orthopedic surgeons established a specialized clinic dedicated to prosthetic surgery for the hip and knee. People from all over Europe are welcome to receive a new hip or knee at the Dutch Hip and KneeClinic. The clinic stands out for its highly specialized medical professionals and short waiting times.

Michiel van Trommel regularly appears in the media. For example, he has appeared in SBS Shownieuws, Vinger aan de Pols, Man Bijt Hond and has sat down with Harry Mens several times for the program Business Class. He also writes columns for the health section of the Telegraaf.

Michiel van Trommel plays squash and runs, he has now run 12 marathons.
